Studio's Summer Activities

Our Studio has been very busy since school ended in May! Click the link below to read more about the festivals and camps that we attended this summer.

OSU Summer Woodwind Institute

"I helped out with the OSU Summer Woodwind Institute, both as an RA and helping to coach some of the chamber groups. I enjoyed getting to know the students and seeing their improvement in just a few days."

--Lauren Hampton, OSU Senior

"At the beginning of the summer, I had the chance to help out with the OSU Summer Woodwind Institute as an RA and TA. Helping junior high and high school students put together chamber works was so much fun! I knew that I would love it, but I didn't realize that I would be so struck by the personalities of these students. They all just want to make music, and they were there because they loved it and wanted to be there. I am so glad I had the chance to help teach them!"

Passion Flute V

"In June I went to Passion Flute V, and flute seminar held at the University of Northern Iowa with Angeleita Floyd, Jill Felber, and Claudia Anderson. There were so many great performances in masterclass, but the most important thing I took away was that a performance is a whole body activity - you have to use everything, even your personality, to create a performance that is unique and meaningful to the audience."

15th Annual Summer Flute Retreat

"Working at the 15th Annual Summer Flute Retreat was one of the best experiences of my life. In a week, I was able to teach 3rd-7th graders (some who came in knowing zero scales) all 12 major scales from memory. I also taught them how to play in keys with up to 4 flats and sharps, along with playing in “more complicated” meters they had never seen like 6/8 that had pickups. When teaching them all these things I never once said something was hard, and they never once questioned me saying that it would be easy for them to do. When the camp ended and the students had their final recital, I was told that my class of beginners, were one of the most successful classes that the camp had had. I can honestly say that I am so glad I was able to spend a week working with Gerald Carey, Sue Gillio, and Ellen Huntington and I had worked to make myself a better teacher, while making each member of my class a stronger flute player!"

2013 Areon Summer Flute Institute

"I had a wonderful experience as coordinator for the 2013 Areon Summer Flute Institute in Los Altos, California. The Institute is aimed at beginner through college-level flutists who want to expand their playing abilities in a supportive and fun environment. The students are also able to gain experience in a chamber music setting, and show off their hard work in a concert at the end of the Institute. I was given the opportunity to work closely with the junior-level campers. I coordinated the camp's activities and games, as well as taught the beginning warmup class. It was a wonderful opportunity not only to enhance my teaching skills, but to learn what it takes to run a music institute. I had a wonderful time and I look forward to working with Areon again in 2014!"

Quartz Mountain

"The Oklahoma Summer Institute at Quartz Mountain was one of the best musical experiences I’ve had the pleasure of having. The faculty is absolutely wonderful and come from all over the country. The Orchestra is just phenomenal and one of the best groups I have ever been a part of. I was one of three flutes selected from the entire state to attend this two week arts camp. I was also selected as the piccolo and played wonderful pieces including the famous Overture to Candide. In this camp, aside from being in the orchestra, we were assigned to chamber groups and had the pleasure of being in a woodwind quintet. Getting to play in a chamber group along with the orchestra was absolutely wonderful and the always gave wonderful and helpful feedback to help us improve in our own playing abilities. Quartz Mountain is just a wonderful camp and something everyone should audition for and be a part of! "
