Studio's Summer Activities

Our Studio has been very busy since school ended in May! Click the link below to read more about the conventions and camps that we attended this summer.

Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Convention

"This summer I had the pleasure of auditioning and being selected to
play for the 70th annual National Intercollegiate Band hosted by the
Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma band service fraternity and
sorority! I got to travel down to Orlando, Florida to rehearse and
perform a variety of selections of notable band works including a
world premiere of a commissioned work for Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta
Sigma by Steven Bryant. The band consisted of about 75 members that
came from universities, colleges, and conservatories from all over the
country. I was selected, after a second audition upon arrival, to be
the piccoloist for the ensemble! It was a blast to work with such
dedicated and enthusiastic musicians. With only three days to arrive,
audition, rehearse and perform, this was by far the fastest and most
intense I've ever prepared for a concert. The outcome was more than
worth the work put in and I could not have been happier with how we
performed.

After the concert, I also had the pleasure of staying and attending
the National Convention for Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma where I
am a member of the Tau Beta Sigma band co-ed sorority. I was able to
attended workshops, classes, speakers, and committee meetings and
learn so much from the inner workings of the sorority. Overall it was
a wonderful experience that I will hold dear for the rest of my life!"

Texas Summer Flute Symposium

"This summer I had the opportunity to perform twice at the Texas Flute Symposium. My first performance was for Carol Wincec, the flute professor at Julliard, and Conor Nelson who teaches at Bowling Green State University. Going to a Symposium like this offers a lot of opportunities to either perform and receive feedback, listen to other flute players, and make connections within the flute community. I had a lovely time meeting flute players from several different areas of Texas, Ohio, New England, and California. The Symposium covered a variety of ages from as young as middle school to adults with orchestral jobs. It was very inspiring hearing such talented musicians."

OSU Summer Music Camp

"I was able to help with this summers Music Camp at OSU. This was the second year the music department was having an all inclusive, music camp. The camp offers ensembles for Band, Orchestra, and Piano. It was great to see the growth from its first year to now, and the incorporation of new electives the students could take: jazz band, music theory, and vocal lessons. I also enjoyed getting to work with the music staff and meeting many of the campers who were excited about their possible future at OSU. Every morning I would attend Dr. Broffitts warm ups with the flute section, and had a great time reinforcing core concepts. I found it very interesting listening to what the students thought about different aspects of flute playing like tone, articulation, and vibrato. Hearing what they thought was important about these concepts reminded me about how we can all learn something from one another and the way someone explains something can help you view these elements with a new perspective."
